Burundi is a landlocked country in the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and south, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. Its size is just under 28,000 kmē with an estimated population of almost 8,700,000. Its capital is Bujumbura. Although the country is landlocked, much of the southwestern border is adjacent to Lake Tanganyika.

Burundi is one of the ten poorest countries in the world. It has the lowest per capita GDP of any nation in the world. The tourist industry almost died after the civil war in 1993. The civil war ended some years ago and Burundi is now relatively safe (2010). But before going there, make sure you have the latest information about safety.


Wildlife and National parks
If the peace process holds , Burundi may once again find itself on the tourist map of East Africa. There are 3 national parks in Burundi; Kibira National Park, Rusizi National Park and Ruvubu National Park (also known as Rurubu National Park) and there are some Wildlife Reserves. The main attractcion are the lush tropical forests with monkeys and birds.
